Ecological Urban Design Consulting

We provide our clients with exclusive consulting for ecologically sensitive building and development projects. All projects must be pre-screened by Ecocity Builders and exhibit some of the following elements:

  • density with "human features informed by ecology" near transit
  • minimum or no parking
  • inclusion of car-free housing (assured by lease agreement or deed restriction) if possible
  • ground floor commercial and/or cultural uses, including grocery stores in downtown and neighborhood commercial centers
  • balanced development
  • energy conservation
  • restoration of nature
  • public passageways through blocks
  • ecological features such as passive solar orientation, solar green houses, terracing and rooftop gardens
  • conversion of streets from motor vehicle to pedestrian and bicycle where feasible

We have over twenty-five years of background in ecological design and planning. We produce drawings and deliver critique and verbal or written consultation. We are consultants to developers, city governments, non profit organizations, community groups and educational institutions.

We require of the client access to the planning and design process at regular intervals, that is, in visits to the developer and his or her architect (s) and/or through access to copies of drawings and descriptive written materials representing the proposed development.

Our work consists of any or all of the following:

  1. creating "conceptual illustrative drawing" sufficient to communicate basic ecological organization of massing and uses of architectural and open space, and in sufficient detail to indicate interrelation of parts and functions for a particular project.
  2. reviewing drawings and interviewing developers and architects about plans already in progress.
  3. studying building program and strategy for winning approvals.
  4. studying public and official sentiment and zoning and general plan content of the particular development.
  5. verbally and/or in writing, recommending particular design features and strategies for including ecologically-relevent features in the project for the client.
  6. executing "amendment drawings" as needed to illustrate particular design and re-design features we recommend for the client.
  7. suggesting where further assistance and support to the project may be found and connecting with such people.
  8. attempting to resolve esthetic problems that arise from use of higher density and ecological design features by providing suggestions for fitting such features in to historic and existing neighborhood, city-wide, regional and global context.
